Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was always eager to ask Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who the two women were about whom Allah said: "If you two repent to Allah, (that is better), for your hearts have inclined (to wrong)." [Surah al-Tahrim: 4] Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) performed Hajj and I performed Hajj with him. On the way, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned aside and went to relieve himself, and I went with him carrying a water vessel. Then he came out and I poured water over his (may Allah be pleased with him) hands, and he performed ablution. I said: O Commander of the Believers! Who are the two wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about whom Allah Almighty said: "If you two repent to Allah, (that is better), for your hearts have inclined (to wrong)." [Surah al-Tahrim: 4]? Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: How astonishing you are, O Ibn Abbas! (Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By Allah, he disliked his question, yet he did not conceal it, but said): They were Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he began to narrate the story: We, the people of Quraysh, used to have the upper hand over our women. When we came to Madinah, we found people here whose women had the upper hand over them, and our women began to learn from them. He said: My house was among Banu Umayyah bin Zayd in the upper part (of Madinah). One day I became angry with my wife and she began to answer me back. I was taken aback that she answered me back. She said: Why are you taken aback that I answer you back? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answer him back, and today one of them has kept away from him until night. He said: I went to Hafsah and said: Do you too answer back the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: Yes! And today one of them has kept away from him until night. I said: Whoever among you has done this has suffered loss. Does any one of you feel safe that the anger of Allah Almighty will not fall on her because of the displeasure of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She would be ruined. Never answer back the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and do not ask him for anything; ask me for whatever you need. And do not be deceived by your neighbour being dearer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than you. He meant Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
He said: I had a neighbour from the Ansar, and we used to go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in turns. One day he would go to him, and the next day I would attend upon him. He would tell me of any revelation, and I would tell him of events likewise. We used to talk about how the tribe of Ghassan had shod their horses to wage war against us. My companion came, then he came to me at night, at the time of Isha, knocked on my door and called out to me. I went out to him and he said: Something tremendous has happened. I said: Have the Ghassan come out? He said: No, rather something greater and more serious than that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has divorced his wives. I said: Hafsah has failed and lost. I had thought this was going to happen. When I had prayed the Fajr prayer, I gathered my clothes and came to Hafsah. I found her weeping. I asked: Has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) really divorced you?
She said: I do not know; he has withdrawn (from us) in this matter. I met an Abyssinian slave of his and said to him: Ask permission for Umar. The slave went in, then came back to me and said: You were mentioned to him, but he remained silent. I went to the mosque. There, people were sitting near the pulpit, weeping. I sat for a while, then my feelings overcame me, so I came back to the slave and said: Ask permission for Umar. The slave went in, came out and gave the same reply. I again went and sat near the pulpit in the mosque. But the same feeling came over me, so I went a third time and asked permission. When permission was not given, I turned my back and set off. Suddenly the slave began calling me: Come, permission has been given to you. I went in and greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam. He was lying on a mat, and its marks were visible on his body. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Have you really divorced your wives? He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards me and said: "No." I said: Allahu Akbar! O Messenger of Allah! Consider us: we, the people of Quraysh, used to have the upper hand over our women. When we came to Madinah, we found there a people whose women had the upper hand over them. Now our women too have begun to learn from them. One day I became angry with my wife and she began to answer me back. I was taken aback, and she said: Why are you taken aback? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even answer him back, and today one of them has kept away from him. I said: Then she is ruined and destroyed. Does any one of you feel safe that the anger of Allah Almighty will not descend on her because of the displeasure of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She would be ruined. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled (on hearing this). I said: Then I went to Hafsah and said to her: Do not be deceived by the fact that your neighbour is dearer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than you. He smiled again. I said: O Messenger of Allah! May I stay and keep you company?
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." I sat down, then raised my head and looked around the house. By Allah, I saw nothing in it worth a glance except three hides. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Supplicate for abundance for your Ummah. How much abundance has been given to Rome and Persia, even though they do not worship Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) sat up straight and said: "O Umar! Are you in doubt? These are people whose good things have been given to them (in advance) in the life of this world." I said: I seek forgiveness from Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had sworn that he would not go to his wives for a month, in order to admonish them severely, until Allah Almighty settled the matter with him.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When twenty-nine nights had passed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and began with me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! You swore that you would not come to us for thirty days, yet only twenty-nine days have passed; I have been counting them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A month can also be twenty-nine days." Then he said: "O Aishah! I am going to tell you something; do not be hasty in it, but consult your parents." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse to me: "O Prophet, say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world and its adornment" [Surah al-Ahzab: 28] to the end of the verse. She said: By Allah, my parents would never tell me to separate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Should I consult my parents about this matter? I desire Allah, His Messenger and the Hereafter.
In one narration it is mentioned that Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: Do not tell (your other wives) that I chose you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been sent only to convey, and I have not been sent to make things hard (for people)."
