Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sought permission (to enter) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He found people sitting at his door; not one of them had been given permission, but Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) alone was given permission. He went in, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked permission, and he too was given permission. He found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting troubled and silent, with his wives around him. The narrator said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will say something that will make the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laugh." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! What would you think of the daughter of Kharijah? She asked me for maintenance, so I went to her and struck her on the neck." The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "These around me are also asking me for maintenance (expenses)." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went up to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and struck her on the neck, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went up to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and struck her on the neck, and both of them said: "Do you ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for something that he (peace and blessings be upon him) does not have?" They said: "By Allah, we will never ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for anything that he does not have."
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept away from them for a month, or twenty-nine (29) days. Then this verse was revealed: "O Prophet, say to your wives" [Surah al-Ahzab: 28]. The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) began with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "O Aishah! I am going to put a matter to you, and I would like you not to be hasty in it until you have consulted your parents." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "What is it?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this blessed verse (mentioned above). Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Should I consult my parents about you (peace and blessings be upon him)? No, rather I have chosen Allah and His Messenger. I request you not to tell your other wives what I have said." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No; if any of them asks me, I will tell her. Indeed, Allah Almighty did not send me to be harsh or to put others into hardship; rather He sent me as a teacher and one who makes things easy."
