It is narrated from Yazid bin Hurmuz that Najdah al-Haruri asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the relatives: who are they? And he asked about a slave and a woman who are present at the place of the spoils: should they be given anything from the spoils? And he asked about killing children. So he said: "O Yazid, write! Were it not for (fear of) a foolish deed, I would not write. You asked about the relatives, who they are; in our view it is we ourselves, but our people refused us that. And you asked about the slave and the woman who are present at the time of the spoils: there is no fixed share for them, but they may be given something as a reward. And you asked about killing children: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not kill them, so you should not either, unless you come to know about them what the companion of Musa came to know. And you asked about the orphan, when his orphanhood ends: his orphanhood ends when he reaches maturity and right guidance."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is possible that by the words of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), "our people refused us," he meant people other than the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Yazid bin Mu'awiyah and his family. [Sahih]
