Hisham bin Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from his father (may Allah have mercy on him) that Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) and Muti' bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) as the executor of their wills. Al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Muti' (may Allah be pleased with him): I do not accept your bequest. Muti' (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: I adjure you by Allah and by the ties of kinship; by Allah, in this I am following only the opinion of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). I heard Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say: If I leave an estate or entrust a charge to anyone, I will entrust it to al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), for he is one of the pillars of the religion.
