Bayhaqi 11195 — The permissibility of pledges

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was invited to barley bread and fat. One morning I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the family of Muhammad does not have even a sa' of grain, nor a sa' of dates." On that day he (peace and blessings be upon him) had nine wives, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had pledged his coat of mail with a Jew in Madinah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had bought a sa' of grain from him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have enough to redeem his coat of mail.
