Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I took barley bread and fat to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) had pledged his coat of mail with a Jew in Madinah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken barley from that Jew for his family. One day I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Today the family of Muhammad has neither a sa' of dates nor a sa' of barley." And in those days he (peace and blessings be upon him) had nine wives.
