Ubayd bin Fayruz said: I said to Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): Tell me which defects the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked or forbade in sacrificial animals. He said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand like this, and my hand is shorter than the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Four kinds of defect must not be in sacrificial animals: 1. a one-eyed animal whose blindness in one eye is evident; 2. a sick animal whose sickness is evident; 3. a lame animal whose lameness is evident; 4. an animal with a broken bone (so emaciated) that it has no marrow." He said: I dislike a defect in the ear or the horn. Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Leave whatever you dislike, but do not make it unlawful for anyone else.
