أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنِي الْمِنْهَالُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ، يَقُولُ: خَرَجْتُ مَعَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فِي طَرِيقٍ مِنْ طُرُقِ الْمَدِينَةِ، فَإِذَا غِلْمَةٌ يَرْمُونَ دَجَاجَةً، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: مَنْ فَعَلَ هَذَا ؟ فَتَفَرَّقُوا . فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "لَعَنَ مَنْ مَثَّلَ بِالْحَيَوَانِ".
Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was passing with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) through one of the streets of Madinah, when suddenly we saw some boys who were (tying up a chicken and) using it as a target. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Who has done this? They all ran away in different directions. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who mutilates an animal.
Brief Explanation

That is, if any animal is tied up and then targeted with an arrow or bullet, and this killing is done by tormenting it, cutting off its limbs or flesh piece by piece, or mutilating it—this is something that Islam has strongly condemned. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has invoked curse upon the one who does such an act.
