Abu’l-‘Ashra’ (Usamah bin Malik) narrated from his father that he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Is it necessary to slaughter (the animal) only between the throat and the collarbone? He said: “If you pierce its thigh, that is also sufficient for you.” Hammad bin Salamah said: We interpret this regarding an animal that has fallen into a well.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2010)
If this hadith is accepted as authentic, then the meaning of piercing or stabbing in the thigh would be that when one is unable to slaughter (the animal) in the prescribed manner—such as when a wild animal is running away, or a domesticated animal becomes unruly and there is no opportunity to slaughter it—then it is permissible to strike and wound it anywhere, and then perform the slaughter (dhabh) afterwards (and Allah knows best).
