It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of the Trench: "May Allah fill the graves and houses of these polytheists with fire, because they kept us from «صلاة الوسطيٰ» (the middle prayer), until the sun had set."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1265)
From this hadith, it is understood that the ‘Asr prayer is the Salat al-Wusta (the middle prayer). Furthermore, it is evident that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was so grieved at missing the ‘Asr prayer that he supplicated against the polytheists, even though the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s conduct towards his enemies was characterized by love and compassion.
The meaning of Salat al-Wusta is “the prayer of excellence,” and by this is meant the ‘Asr prayer; this is the correct opinion.
