«إن الله إذا كان يوم القيامة ينزل إلى العباد ليقضي بينهم وكل أمة جاثية فأول من يدعو به رجل جمع القرآن ورجل قتل في سبيل الله ورجل كثير المال فيقول الله للقارئ: ألم أعلمك ما أنزلت على رسولي قال: بلى يا رب قال: فماذا عملت بما علمت؟ قال: كنت أقوم به آناء الليل وآناء النهار فيقول الله له: كذبت وتقول له الملائكة: كذبت ويقول الله له: بل أردت أن يقال فلان قارئ فقد قيل ذلك; ويؤتى بصاحب المال فيقول الله له: ألم أوسع عليك حتى لم أدعك تحتاج إلى أحد؟ قال: بلى يا رب قال: فماذا عملت فيما آتيتك؟ قال: كنت أصل الرحم وأتصدق فيقول الله له: كذبت وتقول الملائكة: كذبت ويقول الله: بل أردت أن يقال: فلان جواد فقد قيل ذلك; ويؤتى بالذي قتل في سبيل الله فيقول الله: في ماذا قتلت؟ فيقول: أمرت بالجهاد في سبيلك فقاتلت حتى قتلت فيقول الله له: كذبت وتقول له الملائكة: كذبت ويقول الله: بل أردت أن يقال فلان جريء فقد قيل ذلك; يا أبا هريرة أولئك الثلاثة أول خلق الله تسعر بهم النار يوم القيامة»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, on the Day of Resurrection, when Allah Almighty descends in His majesty to judge between His servants, and every nation is fallen on its knees, then among the first to be called will be a man who memorised the Qur'an, a man who was killed in the path of Allah, and a man who had much wealth. Allah Almighty will say to the reciter of the Qur'an: Did I not teach you what I sent down upon My Messenger? He will say: Yes indeed, O my Lord! Allah will ask: What did you do with your knowledge? He will say: I used to stand (in prayer) with it through the hours of the night and the day. Then Allah will say to him: You have lied. And the angels will also say to him: You have lied. Allah Almighty will say: Rather, your intention was that it be said that so-and-so is a great reciter, and that has been said. Then the wealthy man will be brought, and Allah will ask him: Did I not give you such abundance that I did not leave you in need of anyone? He will say: Yes indeed, O my Lord! Allah will ask: What did you do with what I gave you? He will say: I used to maintain ties of kinship and give in charity. Allah will say: You have lied. And the angels will also say: You have lied. Allah will say: Rather, your intention was that it be said that so-and-so is very generous, and that has been said. Then the man who was killed in the path of Allah will be brought, and Allah will ask him: For what were you killed? He will say: You commanded jihad in Your path, so I fought until I was killed. Allah will say: You have lied. The angels will also say to him: You have lied. Allah will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is very brave, and that has been said. (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) O Abu Hurayrah! These are the three kinds of people with whom the Fire of Hell will be kindled first on the Day of Resurrection."
