"إن العبد إذا وضع في قبره وتولى عنه أصحابه حتى أنه يسمع قرع نعالهم أتاه ملكان فيقعدانه فيقولان له: ما كنت تقول في هذا الرجل؟ لمحمد فأما المؤمن فيقول: أشهد أنه عبد الله ورسوله ¤ فيقال: انظر إلى مقعدك من النار قد أبدلك الله به مقعدا من الجنة فيراهما جميعا ويفسح له في قبره سبعون ذراعا ويملأ عليه خضرا إلى يوم يبعثون; وأما الكافر أو المنافق فيقال له ما كنت تقول في هذا الرجل؟ فيقول: لا أدري كنت أقول ما يقول الناس فيقال له: لا دريت ولا تليت ثم يضرب بمطراق من حديد ضربة بين أذنيه فيصيح صيحة يسمعها من يليه غير الثقلين ويضيق عليه قبره حتى تختلف أضلاعه"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, when a servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn away and leave him, so much so that he hears the sound of their footsteps, two angels come to him, sit him up and ask him: 'What did you used to say about this man (that is, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him))?' As for the believer, he says: 'I bear witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.' Then it is said to him: 'Look at your place in Hell; Allah has indeed given you in exchange for it a place in Paradise.' So he sees both places, and his grave is widened for him by seventy cubits, and it is made green and lush for him until the Day of Resurrection. As for the disbeliever or the hypocrite, when he is asked: 'What did you used to say about this man?' he replies: 'I do not know; I used to say what the people said.' Then it will be said to him: 'You neither tried to know for yourself nor followed those who read (the Qur'an).' Then he will be struck between his two ears with such a forceful blow from an iron hammer that he will let out a terrible scream, which everything around him will hear except humans and jinn, and his grave will be made so narrow for him that his ribs will interlock with one another."
