It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been shown the place of your emigration: it is a salty land lying between two tracts of black volcanic rock (harrah). It is either Hajar or Yathrib (Madinah)." The narrator says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated to Madinah, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). I too intended to set out with him (peace and blessings be upon him), but some young men of Quraysh stopped me. So I spent that night (restlessly), standing up and sitting down, and they said: Allah has afflicted him with a stomach ailment (keeping him away from you), although I had no illness. Then, when they had gone and I had covered some distance, some of them came after me to take me back. I said to them: Would you like me to give you a few uqiyahs of gold, and you let me go on my way and keep your word? So I went back with them to Makkah and said: Dig beneath the threshold of my door, the gold is there; and go to such-and-such a woman and take the two fine garments as well. Then I set out from there and reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Quba before he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved on from there (to Madinah). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he said three times: "O Abu Yahya! Your trade has been profitable." I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! No one reached you before me; it can only be Jibril (peace be upon him) who informed you of it.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain through the descendants of Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

It is narrated from Ibn Jurayj concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "And among the people is he who sells himself, seeking the pleasure of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 207], that this verse was revealed about Sayyiduna Suhayb bin Sinan and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with them both), and that the man who caught up with Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) on the road to Madinah was Qunfudh bin Umayr bin Jud'an. Ibn Jurayj says that Ikrimah, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), stated that Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) gave all his wealth in Makkah to ransom himself (from the idolaters) and then set out to emigrate; when people caught up with him on the way, he handed over to them the rest of his wealth as well.
