It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came when the prayer had already begun, and three people were sitting there, one of whom was Abu Jahsh al-Laythi. He said: Stand up and pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Two of them stood up, but Abu Jahsh refused. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Jahsh, pray with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said (insolently): I will not stand up until someone with stronger arms than mine and a harder grip wrestles me, throws me down and rubs my face in the dust. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went towards him; I was stronger than him and had a harder grip, so I threw him down and rubbed his face in the dust. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and separated us. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out in a state of anger until he reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and noticed signs of anger on his face, he asked: "O Abu Hafs, what has troubled you?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I passed by some people sitting at the door of the mosque when the prayer had already begun, and Abu Jahsh al-Laythi was among them. Then he related the whole incident and said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, Uthman's support for him was only because he had once been his guest for a night, so he wanted to repay him for it. When Sayyiduna Uthman heard this, he said: O Messenger of Allah, do you not hear what Umar is saying about us? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The pleasure of Umar is a mercy. By Allah, I would have wished that you had brought me the head of that wicked man." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (hearing this) set off. When he had gone some distance, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and said: "O Umar, come here. Where do you intend to go?" He said: I was going to bring the head of that wicked man. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down so that I may tell you how free of need the Lord Almighty is of the prayer of Abu Jahsh al-Laythi: Indeed, in Allah's first heaven there are angels immersed in humility who will not raise their heads until the Hour is established; when the Hour comes, they will raise their heads and say: Our Lord, we have not worshipped You as You deserve to be worshipped. And in the second heaven there are angels in a state of prostration; they will not raise their heads until the Hour, and when the Hour comes they will raise their heads and say: Our Lord, we have not worshipped You as You deserve. And in the third heaven there are angels in a state of bowing; they will not raise their heads until the Hour, and when the Hour comes they will raise their heads and say: We have not worshipped You as You deserve." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah, what do they say (in their glorification)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of the first heaven say: 'Subhana dhi al-mulki wa al-malakut' (Glory be to the One who possesses the dominion and sovereignty of the heavens and the earth); the people of the second heaven say: 'Subhana dhi al-izzati wa al-jabarut' (Glory be to the One who possesses might and overpowering majesty); and the people of the third heaven say: 'Subhana al-Hayyi alladhi la yamut' (Glory be to the Ever-Living who will never die). So, O Umar, recite these words in your prayer." He said: O Messenger of Allah, then what about the supplication that you taught me and ordered me to recite in my prayer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite that one once and this one once." And the supplication that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered him to recite was: 'A'udhu bi-afwika min iqabika, wa a'udhu bi-ridaka min sakhatika, wa a'udhu bika minka, jalla wajhuk' (I seek refuge in Your pardon from Your punishment, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, and I seek refuge in You from You; exalted and majestic is Your Face).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: I never heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say about anything, "I think it is such and such," except that it turned out just as he thought. Once Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting when a handsome man passed by him. He looked at him and said: "Either my judgement is mistaken, or you are still on your religion of the Jahiliyyah, and you were their soothsayer (kahin) in the Jahiliyyah." The man said: I have never seen a Muslim man received the way I have been today. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I adjure you to tell me the truth." He said: Yes, I was their soothsayer in the Jahiliyyah. He asked: "What was the strangest thing that came to you?" Then he mentioned a long hadith whose chain is not present (at this place).
