Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4553

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: I never heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say about anything, "I think it is such and such," except that it turned out just as he thought. Once Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting when a handsome man passed by him. He looked at him and said: "Either my judgement is mistaken, or you are still on your religion of the Jahiliyyah, and you were their soothsayer (kahin) in the Jahiliyyah." The man said: I have never seen a Muslim man received the way I have been today. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I adjure you to tell me the truth." He said: Yes, I was their soothsayer in the Jahiliyyah. He asked: "What was the strangest thing that came to you?" Then he mentioned a long hadith whose chain is not present (at this place).

Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it (3866) from Yahya bin Sulayman, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this chain, and mentioned the story to which the author (al-Hakim) alluded, except that in al-Bukhari's narration the words are, with hesitation: "or he was indeed their soothsayer".
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (11/338): The gist of it is that Umar supposed something that wavered between two things, one of which itself wavered between two things; as if he said: This supposition is either wrong or right; if it is right, then this man is either still upon his disbelief or he was a soothsayer (in the Jahiliyyah). The situation revealed the last alternative (his having been a soothsayer). It seems that some indication appeared to him from the manner of the man's walk or something else, which produced this supposition in him. And Allah knows best.
