It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the last days of his life, when a gathering became long, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would say upon getting up: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bi hamdik, ashhadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; I bear witness that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You). One of us said, "O Messenger of Allah, these are words we did not hear from you before (are they new)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are an expiation for the shortcomings that occur during a gathering."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered around him and he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to get up, he would say: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bi hamdik, ashhadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, 'amiltu su'an wa zalamtu nafsi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; I bear witness that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You. I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You). We said, "O Messenger of Allah, are these words you have adopted only recently?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and said to me: 'O Muhammad, these are the expiations for gatherings (for the sins committed in them).'"
