Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1993

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered around him and he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to get up, he would say: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bi hamdik, ashhadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, 'amiltu su'an wa zalamtu nafsi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; I bear witness that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You. I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You). We said, "O Messenger of Allah, are these words you have adopted only recently?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and said to me: 'O Muhammad, these are the expiations for gatherings (for the sins committed in them).'"

Grading: Apart from the additional words of the supplication ("'amiltu su'an"), this hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note: There is a disagreement in its chain concerning Mus'ab bin Hayyan and his brother Muqatil bin Hayyan, but Muqatil is strong and Mus'ab is "hasan al-hadith"; therefore, according to al-'Iraqi, this chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (10188) narrated it through the chain of Yunus bin Muhammad, from Mus'ab, from Muqatil bin Hayyan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The supporting reports for the main supplication have already passed under the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (1990).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the last part of the supplication ("'amiltu su'an") is the saying of Ibn Mas'ud, reported in al-Nasa'i (10622) with a "sahih" chain, in which he said: "The best speech is that the servant says" (this supplication).
