Mustadrak al-Hakim 935 — It is from the Sunnah of prayer to say

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that this verse: "And do not recite your prayer too loudly, nor too quietly" [Al-Isra: 110] was revealed concerning the tashahhud.

Grading: The chain is sahih but the text is "shadh".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hafs bin Ghiyath is alone in the wording "in the tashahhud", whereas the other thiqah students of Hisham bin 'Urwah (such as the narrators in al-Bukhari, Muslim and al-Nasa'i) narrated it with the wording "in supplication (du'a)".
Important point: The preserved wording is "supplication", which covers both inside and outside the prayer.
Reference / Source: The narration of Hafs bin Ghiyath was recorded by al-Tabari, Ibn Khuzaymah (707), and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar".
