It is narrated from Sa'id bin Jubayr that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to ask: "Has the red star (Venus) risen yet?" When he saw it, he would say: "May there be no welcome for it." Then he would say: "Two angels among the angels, Harut and Marut, asked Allah Almighty to be sent down to the earth, so they were sent down to the earth. They used to judge between the people, and when evening came they would recite certain words and ascend by them to the heaven. Then, as a trial for them, a woman who was among the most beautiful of people was destined for them, and desire was cast into them, but they kept putting it off. Then when the desire became settled in their hearts, they kept on at it until she fixed an appointed time with them. When she came to them at the appointed time, she said: 'Teach me the word by which you ascend to the heaven.' So they taught her the word. She recited it and ascended by it to the heaven; then she was transformed and made into what you see (a star). Then when evening came for the two (angels) and they recited the word by which they used to ascend to the heaven, they could not ascend. So this message was sent to them: 'If you wish, choose the punishment of the Hereafter, and if you wish, choose the punishment of this world until the Hour is established, and then you will meet Allah Almighty; if He wills, He will punish you, and if He wills, He will have mercy on you.' One of them looked at his companion and said: 'Rather, we choose the punishment of this world, a million times over.' So they are being punished until the Hour is established."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. And abandoning the hadith of Yahya bin Salamah from his father is among the absurdities that reason rejects! For there is no disagreement that he was one of the experts of the craft (of hadith), so it cannot be objected that his father singled him out with some hadiths which he alone narrates from him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In our manuscripts this has been corrupted into "al-San'ani", whereas the one well known for narrating from Abu al-Jawwab, who is al-Ahwas bin Jawwab, is "Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani".
4/ 4 - 5. General principle: (2) This is how it is in our manuscripts, and we think it most likely that it is an old copyist's error. However, it can be explained this way: the verb here being in the indicative, with the nun retained after "أنْ", is on the basis that it is lightened from "أنَّ" with the pronoun of the matter (damir al-sha'n) omitted, or it follows the dialect of some Arabs who do not let the subjunctive-governing "أن" act on the imperfect verb and so keep it in the indicative. Grading: (1) Its chain is very weak. Yahya bin Salamah bin Kuhayl is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), and it is on account of him that al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak". Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have not come across this route with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar has been narrated from Ibn 'Umar, marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with Ahmad 10/ (6178) and Ibn Hibban (6186), with a weak chain, as is explained in both. Grading: What is correct is that this is from the narration of Ibn 'Umar from Ka'b al-Ahbar, among what he (Ka'b) transmitted from the books of the Children of Israel. Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Tafsir" 1/ 53-54, Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-'Uqubat" (224), and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 1/ 456-457, by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Musa bin 'Uqbah, from Salim bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar, from his father, from Ka'b al-Ahbar. This chain is sahih. See the full discussion of this report in the annotation on "Musnad Ahmad" and "Sahih Ibn Hibban". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" 1/ 84: "This is one of the reports of the Children of Israel … and it would be one of their fables that cannot be relied upon; and Allah knows best."
(9748). Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In our manuscripts this has been corrupted into "al-Suffah", and the correction is from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (9748).
