It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A servant cannot be a believer until he believes in four things: that he bears witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah whom He has sent with the truth; that he has certainty in the resurrection after death; and that he believes in destiny (qadar)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim). Some of the students of Imam al-Thawri fell short in narrating it, but in our view that is of no significance.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir in this chain: some added an unnamed narrator between Rib'i and Ali, which Imam al-Daraqutni judged correct in "al-Ilal" (3/196). However, most narrators dropped him, and Imam al-Tirmidhi (2145) and the author (Imam al-Hakim) preferred this route (without him). Note / Clarification: Abu Asim is "al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Nabil", Sufyan is "Sufyan al-Thawri", and Mansur is "Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir". Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Hibban narrated it at (178) from al-Fadl bin al-Hubab, from Muhammad bin Kathir, with this chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 2/(758) narrated it from Muhammad bin Ja'far, and Imam al-Tirmidhi (2145) by way of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi; both of them narrate from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, from Mansur. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nadr bin Shumayl contradicted the narrators mentioned, mentioning in his narration from Shu'bah an intermediary (narrator) between Rib'i and Ali. Important point: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that the narration of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi from Shu'bah is, in his view, more sound than the narration of al-Nadr bin Shumayl. Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah narrated it at (81) with the chain Sharik bin Abd Allah al-Nakha'i, from Mansur, from Rib'i, from Ali.
