Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8988

Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Haydah al-Qushayri (may Allah be pleased with him)); he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah! I did not come to you until I had sworn, more times than the number of these (he pointed to his fingers), meaning (the fingers of) both hands, that I would neither come to you nor adopt your religion. And I was a man who knew nothing except what Allah and His Messenger taught me. So I ask you by Allah: with what has our Lord sent you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "With Islam." He said: I said: O Prophet of Allah! What is the sign of Islam? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you say: 'I have submitted my face to Allah and have withdrawn (from all besides Allah),' and that you establish the prayer and pay the zakah. Every Muslim is inviolable to every other Muslim (i.e. his life, wealth and honour are protected); they are two brothers who help each other. Allah does not accept any deed from a Muslim who associates partners (with Allah) after having embraced Islam, until he leaves the polytheists and joins the Muslims. Why is it that I am holding you by your waists (waist-wrappers) to save you from the Fire of Hell? Listen! Indeed, my Lord is the One who will summon me; and listen! He will ask me: 'Did you convey (the message) to My servants?' And I will say: 'O my Lord! I conveyed (the message) to them.' So let the one of you who is present convey (this message) to the one who is absent. Then (on the Day of Resurrection) you will be summoned with your mouths sealed (bound), and then the thigh and the palm of each one of you will be the first to declare his deeds." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Is this our religion? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is your religion, and wherever you do good, it will suffice you."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) The text between the square brackets is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis"; it is not in the manuscripts.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscripts (Z), (K) and in the "Talkhis" the word is "بَلَّغْتُهُ" (with the pronoun ha'), referring back to Islam, while what we have established (in the text) is from manuscripts (M) and (B).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The words "قَالَ: هَذَا دِينُكُمْ" have dropped out of manuscripts (Z) and (B).

Grading: (2) Its chain is hasan on account of Bahz bin Hakim and his father, and 'Ali bin 'Asim al-Wasiti is taken into consideration in corroborating chains and supporting reports; more than one narrator has corroborated him in this narration.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 33/ (20037) and (20043), Ibn Majah (2536), and al-Nasa'i (2227), (2360) and (11405) narrated it by various routes from Bahz bin Hakim, with this chain. Some of them abridged it.
Reference / Source: Its first part was narrated by Ahmad (20011), al-Nasa'i (2228) and Ibn Hibban (160) by way of Abu Qaza'ah al-Bahili, from Hakim bin Mu'awiyah, from his father.
Reference / Source: The story of the fidam (the mouth being sealed) has passed with the author at number (3686) by way of Sa'id al-Jurayri, and at (3687) by way of Abu Qaza'ah, both of them from Hakim bin Mu'awiyah.
Note / Clarification: His saying "بِحُجَزِكُمْ": the plural of hujzah, which is the place at a person's waist where the lower garment is tied.
Details of the narration: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, in answer about Islam: "That you say: I have submitted my face to Allah and I have disassociated myself (from shirk)"; this is how the wording occurs with most of the narrators from Bahz. But Ma'mar bin Rashid differed from them, for he narrated it in his "Jami'" (20115) from Bahz with the wording: "That you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah". And this is likewise how it occurs in the narration of the trustworthy (thiqah) narrator Abu Qaza'ah al-Bahili from Hakim bin Mu'awiyah.
General principle: This (wording with the two testimonies) agrees with the authentic hadiths and reports about what was demanded of the idolaters for Islam. As for his saying "That you say: I have submitted (my face), etc.", it is what uttering the two testimonies entails; perhaps the narrators of the hadith of Hakim bin Mu'awiyah fell short in the narration and abridged it (i.e. conveyed the meaning in place of the original words); and Allah the Exalted knows best.
