Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8983

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, a man sometimes speaks a word which he does not even imagine will go as far as it does (i.e. be so evil), yet because of that (one word) he keeps falling into the depths of Hell for seventy years."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq, and he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 12/ (7215) and al-Tirmidhi (2314) narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Abi 'Adi, and Ibn Hibban (5706) by way of 'Abd al-A'la bin 'Abd al-A'la; both of them from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Salamah differed (from them) in the narration with Ibn Majah (3970), for he narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah; and this narration is "shadh". What is "mahfuz" (preserved) in the hadith of Ibn Ishaq is: 'Isa bin Talhah from Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 14/ (8923), al-Bukhari (6477), Muslim (2988), al-Nasa'i (11773) and Ibn Hibban (5707) and (5708) narrated it by way of Yazid bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Had, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi, from 'Isa bin Talhah, with it, with the wording: "(A servant speaks a word and) because of it he slips into the Fire farther than the distance between the East and the West."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar was narrated by Ahmad 14/ (8411), al-Bukhari (6478) and al-Nasa'i (11774) by way of Abu Salih Dhakwan al-Samman; by Ahmad 14/ (8658) and 16/ (10895) by way of al-Hasan al-Basri; and by Ahmad (15/ 9220) and Ibn Hibban (5716) by way of 'Ata' bin Yasar; all three of them from Abu Hurayrah, and with al-Nasa'i it is mawquf on Abu Hurayrah.
