Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8982

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! The distance between the edge of Hell and its bottom is such that if a rock whose weight equals seven pregnant she-camels laden with their fat, flesh and young were to fall between the edge of Hell and its bottom, it would take seventy years to reach the bottom."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This hadith is sahih by virtue of its (other) routes and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Salamah, who is Ibn Rawh al-Ayli, is "suwaylih" (fairly acceptable), not that strong, and he has errors; this hadith is one of his errors, since in the hadith of al-Zuhri he made it a hadith of Abu Hurayrah, whereas what is "mahfuz" (preserved) in the hadith of al-Zuhri is that it is a hadith of Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Reference / Source: It was narrated thus from al-Zuhri (as a narration of Mu'adh bin Jabal) by Ma'mar in his "Jami'" (20892); by Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli, the companion of 'Uqayl bin Khalid, in Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Zuhd" in the recension of Nu'aym bin Hammad (301), and by his route Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Sifat al-Nar" (26); and by Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 20/ (361).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Ma'mar and Yunus it is "munqati'" (disconnected) between al-Zuhri and Mu'adh, since they did not mention any intermediary between the two, and Ma'mar made it "mawquf" as a saying of Mu'adh. In Shu'ayb's narration from al-Zuhri the wording is: "Some of the people of knowledge narrated to us that Mu'adh bin Jabal used to narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)", and then he mentioned the hadith.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, it will come by another route with the author at number (9007), where he narrated it by way of Farqad bin al-Hajjaj, from 'Uqbah bin Abi al-Hasna', from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This 'Uqbah is "majhul" (unknown); no one narrated from him except Farqad; see his biography in "Mizan al-I'tidal". As for Farqad, more than one person narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" 7/ 322, but also said of him: "He makes mistakes." Abu Hatim al-Razi said, as in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 7/ 82: "He is a shaykh." Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi said in "Tarikh al-Islam" 4/ 183: "I know of no harm in him." And al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis of the Mustadrak" (at what is to come): "Its chain is salih (fair)."
Reference / Source: Ahmad 14/ (8839), Muslim (2844) and Ibn Hibban (7469) narrated by way of Yazid bin Kaysan, from Abu Hazim al-Ashja'i, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he heard the sound of something falling, and he said: "Do you know what this is?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a stone that was thrown into the Fire seventy years (autumns) ago; it has been falling through the Fire, and only now has it reached its bottom." See our annotation on it in the "Musnad".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari with Ibn Hibban (7468), and there is no harm in the narrators of its chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from 'Utbah bin Ghazwan, narrated by Ahmad 29/ (17575), Muslim (2967) and others.
Important point: The hadiths of Abu Musa and 'Utbah are the best on this topic. See all the supporting reports in "Musnad Ahmad" and "Sahih Ibn Hibban".
Note / Clarification: "Al-khalifat": the plural of khalifah, which is a pregnant she-camel whose delivery is near.
