Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8973

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On that Day Hell will be brought, and it will have seventy thousand reins, and with each rein there will be seventy thousand angels pulling it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscripts (Z), (K) and (B) it reads "'Uthman bin Hafs from Ghiyath", which is a corruption; the correct reading is as in manuscript (M): "'Umar bin Hafs bin Ghiyath", and this agrees with the sources of the takhrij.

Grading: (1) Its chain is good (jayyid) on account of al-'Ala' bin Khalid al-Kahili.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over whether it is marfu' or mawquf, and its being mawquf is more correct; however, something like this cannot be said from personal opinion (so it takes the ruling of marfu').
Reference / Source: Muslim (2842) and al-Tirmidhi (2573) narrated it by way of 'Umar bin Hafs bin Ghiyath, with this chain. So al-Hakim's including it (in the Mustadrak) is an oversight on his part.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Umar bin Hafs was contradicted in making it marfu'; he was contradicted by 'Abd Allah bin Sa'id al-Ashajj, who is more reliable than 'Umar, for he narrated it in al-Bazzar's "Musnad" (1756) from Hafs bin Ghiyath as mawquf on 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. Al-Bazzar said: We do not know anyone who narrated this hadith as marfu' except 'Umar bin Hafs from his father.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it as mawquf with al-Tirmidhi (2573 M), and Marwan bin Mu'awiyah al-Fazari with Ibn Abi Shaybah 13/ 151, both of them from al-'Ala' bin Khalid in the same way (mawquf).
Grading: Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (732): In my view the mawquf is more correct, even though Muslim included the hadith of 'Umar bin Hafs in the "Sahih". He also mentioned it likewise in "al-Tatabbu'" (93).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi, critiquing al-Hakim in his "Talkhis", said: "But al-'Ala' was called a liar by Abu Salamah al-Tabudhaki." So he said, yet he was mistaken in this statement, for the 'Ala' whom Abu Salamah called a liar is al-'Ala' bin Khalid al-Qurashi al-Wasiti, and he is other than al-'Ala' bin Khalid al-Asadi al-Kahili al-Kufi from whom the author (al-Hakim) narrated; the latter is saduq (truthful), there is no harm in him, and Muslim narrated this hadith from him.
