It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, between each of the earths and the next earth there is a distance of five hundred years. The uppermost of them rests on the back of a fish whose two ends meet in the sky, the fish rests on the back of a rock, and the rock is in the hand of an angel. The second earth is the prison of the wind. When Allah Almighty intended to destroy the people of Ad, He commanded the keeper (angel) of the wind to send upon them a wind that would destroy Ad. He (the angel) said: 'O my Lord! Shall I release upon them wind the size of a bull's nostril?' Allah, the Compeller, the Mighty and Majestic, said to him: 'Then it would overturn the earth and everything on it. Rather, release upon them wind the size of the hole of a ring.' This is the wind about which Allah Almighty said in His Mighty Book: 'It left nothing it came upon but that it made it like decayed bones.' [Surah al-Dhariyat: 42] The third earth contains the stones of Hell, and the fourth earth contains the sulphur of Hell." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there sulphur in Hell too? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, by the One in whose Hand is my soul! Indeed, in it there are valleys of sulphur such that if even firm mountains were cast into them, they would melt. The fifth earth contains the snakes of Hell; their mouths are as wide as valleys, and they will bite the disbeliever such that no flesh will remain on his bones. The sixth earth contains the scorpions of Hell; the smallest scorpion among them is the size of saddled mules, and it will sting the disbeliever such that its pain will make him forget the heat of Hell. The seventh earth is Saqar, and in it Iblis is bound in chains of iron, one hand in front of him and one hand tied behind him. Then, when Allah intends to release him upon whomever He wills of His servants, He releases him."
Abu al-Samh is alone in narrating this hadith from Isa bin Hilal, and I have previously mentioned his reliability ('adalah) with the explicit statement of Imam Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him). This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this has been corrupted into "طره صخرة", the word "صخرة" has dropped out of manuscript (K), and in manuscript (M) there is a blank space in its place; and in these two it reads "والحوت على ظهره". What is correct is what we have established (in the text).
Grading: (2) Its chain is weak and munkar. Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd Allah bin 'Ayyash al-Qitbani is weak, and Ibn Yunus said: he is munkar al-hadith; and Darraj bin al-Samh is weak, with munkar reports in his narrations, especially from Abu al-Haytham (Sulayman bin 'Amr al-'Utwari). Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi in his "Talkhis" deemed this hadith munkar and declared it defective on account of these two narrators. 'Abd Allah bin Sulayman is al-Himyari Abu Hamzah al-Tawil. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir", as is found in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 5/ 268, and Ibn Mandah in "al-Tawhid" (63), by two routes from 'Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this chain. With Ibn Mandah it is abridged, only its opening part. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said: This hadith is very gharib, and its being marfu' is questionable. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri said in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" that there is nakarah (objectionable content) in its text. And al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab said in "al-Takhwif min al-Nar" (p. 137-138): Its being marfu' is highly munkar; perhaps it is mawquf and some narrators erred and made it marfu'. 'Ata' bin Yasar also narrated similar words from Ka'b (al-Ahbar) as his own saying. Reference / Source: This narration of 'Ata' bin Yasar that was referred to has been mentioned by al-Suyuti in "al-Durr al-Manthur" 8/ 419, attributing it to 'Abd bin Humayd. Note / Clarification: "البِغَالُ الْمُوكَفَةُ" means: laden mules.
