Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8949

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the lightest punishment among the people of Hell will be for a man who will have been made to wear two shoes of fire, from which his brain will be boiling, and he will also be receiving other portions of the punishment. Among them will be some who will be in the Fire up to their knees along with other portions of the punishment, some who will be in the Fire up to the tip of the nose along with other portions of the punishment, some who will be in the Fire up to the collarbones (the upper part of the chest) along with other portions of the punishment, and among them will be some who will be completely submerged in the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. And as for the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both):

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) ما بين المعقوفين ليس في نسخنا الخطية، واستدركناه من "تلخيص المستدرك" للذهبي، ومن مصادر التخريج، وتحرَّف لفظ "أرنبته" في "التلخيص" إلى: أرديته.
Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets is not in our manuscripts; we have supplied it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" and the other referencing sources. In "al-Talkhis" the word "أرنبته" (the tip of his nose) is distorted into "أرديته" (his cloaks).

(2) إسناده صحيح أبو نضرة هو المنذر بن مالك بن قِطْعة العبدي. وصحَّحه الحافظ ابن حجر مختصر زوائد البزار" (2247).
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nadrah is "al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qit'ah al-'Abdi". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared it sahih in "Mukhtasar Zawa'id al-Bazzar" (2247).
وأخرجه البزار (3502 - كشف الأستار) عن محمد بن المثنى، عن حجاج بن المنهال، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (3502 - Kashf al-Astar) recorded it from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Hajjaj bin al-Minhal, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 17 / (11100) و 18 / (11739) عن الحسن بن موسى الأشيب وعفان بن مسلم، وعبد بن حميد (875) عن الحسن بن موسى كلاهما عن حماد بن سلمة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17/11100 and 18/11739) recorded it from al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab and 'Affan bin Muslim, and 'Abd bin Humayd (875) from al-Hasan bin Musa; both of them (al-Hasan and 'Affan) narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
وأخرجه مختصرًا أحمد 17/ (11216)، ومسلم (211) من طريق النعمان بن أبي عياش، عن أبي سعيد الخدري وهو عند أحمد في آخر حديث طويل في ذكر منازل الجنة.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17/11216) and Muslim (211) narrated it "in abridged form" via al-Nu'man bin Abi 'Ayyash, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri; with Ahmad it is at the end of a long hadith mentioning the ranks of Paradise.
قوله: "مع أجزاءِ العذاب" قال السندي في حاشيته على مسند أحمد: ظاهر النسخة القديمة (أي من المسند) أنه جمع جزء - بالزاي - أي: مع سائر أنواع العذاب، أو مصدر أجزأ، أي: مع كفاية العذاب له، وظاهر بعض النسخ أنه مصدر أجرى - بالراء - أي: مع إجراء العذاب على تمام بدنه، والله تعالى أعلم.
Note / Clarification: Concerning the words of the hadith "مع أجزاء العذاب", al-Sindi says in his marginal notes on Musnad Ahmad: "The apparent reading of the old copy (of the Musnad) indicates that it is the plural of 'جزء' (with a za'), meaning: together with all kinds of punishment; or it is the verbal noun of 'أجزأ', meaning: with the punishment sufficing for him. The apparent reading of some copies is that it is the verbal noun of 'أجرى' (with a ra'), meaning: with the punishment being made to run over his entire body. And Allah knows best."
