Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8940

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little. Hypocrisy will appear, trustworthiness will be taken away, mercy will be seized, the trustworthy will be accused and the treacherous will be deemed trustworthy. I see al-shuruf al-jun among you." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah, what are al-shuruf al-jun? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Trials that will overspread like portions of a dark night."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts, in both places, it is written "والجون" (with an added waw), which is wrong; the correction is from the books of rare hadith vocabulary (gharib) and lexicography. "الشرف" (with dammah on the shin and the ra', and it is also said with a sukun on the ra') is the plural of "شارف", meaning: an old she-camel. And "الجون" (with dammah on the jim) is the plural of "جون", meaning: black. Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah" (entry: شرف): "The trials, in their succession and the length of their periods, are likened to old black she-camels."

Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded "hasan", because of Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Ziyadi - he is also called al-Zibadi - and his shaykh Abu 'Uthman al-Asbahi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the first narrator (Khalid), two trustworthy narrators narrated from him, as is in "Tarikh al-Bukhari" (3/160) and "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (3/340), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (6/259); he is also corroborated. As for his shaykh Abu 'Uthman, there is disagreement about his name, as Ibn Hajar explained in "Ta'jil al-Manfa'ah" (1340). He is a "mukhadram" Successor (one who lived in both the Jahiliyyah and Islam), as is transmitted from Ibn Yunus in his "Tarikh". Three narrators narrated from him, and no criticism or praise of him has been transmitted, so the hadith of someone like him does not fall below the rank of "hasan". And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban recorded it in his "Sahih" (6706) via Harmalah bin Yahya al-Tujibi, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (6), Ishaq bin Rahawayh in his "Musnad" (343), Ibn Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (pp. 472-473) and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-'Uqubat" (43) narrated it through Salaman bin 'Amir - who was a righteous man - from Abu 'Uthman al-Asbahi, by two routes that strengthen one another.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With Nu'aym alone this narration has the wording: "When time draws close, the old black she-camels will kneel among you: trials like portions of the dark night." This narration is "shadh" (anomalous).
Details of the narration: The words at the beginning of the hadith: "If you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little", were recorded by al-Bukhari (6485) via Sa'id bin al-Musayyab and (6637) via Hammam bin Munabbih, both of them from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: And the words: "The trustworthy will be accused and the untrustworthy will be trusted" - something similar has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8645) via Abu Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah.
