Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8938

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah; he said: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the Hatim (the Hijr of the Ka'bah), and he said: "Weep, and if weeping does not come to you, then make yourselves weep. If you knew the reality, one of you would pray until his back broke, and weep until his voice gave out."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the (name) is distorted into "الحسن بن محمد بن القيسان".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In fact this is (Abu Ja'far) "al-Qabbani", a hadith master (hafiz) and author; see his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (13/499). His shaykh 'Amr bin 'Ali is "al-Fallas", a well-known hafiz and one of the narrators of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Sa'id is "al-Qattan", and Ibn Abi Mulaykah is "Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd Allah (bin) Abi Mulaykah al-Taymi".
Reference / Source: Husayn al-Marwazi recorded it in his additions to "Zuhd Ibn al-Mubarak" (1007) from al-Fadl bin Musa, from 'Uthman bin al-Aswad, with this same chain.
