Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8937

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: I remembered the Fire and wept. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Aishah, what is the matter with you?" I said: I remembered the Fire and wept. Will you people remember your families on the Day of Resurrection? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three places where no one will remember anyone: [at the Scale], until he knows whether his scale is light or heavy; and at the time the records are given, when it is said: 'Haa'umuqra'u kitabiyah' (Come, read my record), until he knows where his record will be placed, in his right hand, in his left hand, or behind his back; and at the Sirat, when it is placed over the back of Hell, on both its sides many hooks and thorns, by which Allah will hold back whomever He wills of His creation, (in these places no one will remember anyone) until he knows whether he will be saved or not."
This hadith is sahih (authentic); its chain is on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), although there is irsal (a break in the chain) in it between al-Hasan and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). However, it is authentically established by reports that al-Hasan used to visit the homes of Sayyidah Aishah and Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) as a child.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In place of the text between the square brackets there was a "blank" (empty space) in manuscripts (Z) and (B), and it had dropped out of manuscripts (K) and (M); we have supplied it from the referencing sources, and the text that follows points to it.

Grading: Its chain is weak because of a "break" (inqita') between al-Hasan - who is al-Basri - and 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the author (al-Hakim) will point to this defect later.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn 'Ulayyah is "Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Miqsam".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4755) - and via him al-Bayhaqi in "al-I'tiqad" (p. 210) - and Qiwam al-Sunnah al-Asbahani in "al-Hujjah fi Bayan al-Mahajjah" (307) recorded it through several routes from Isma'il bin Ibrahim Ibn 'Ulayyah, with this same chain. And Ibn Rahawayh narrated it in his "Musnad" (1349) via Wuhayb bin Khalid, from Yunus bin 'Ubayd.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (41/24696) narrated it "in abridged form" via al-Qasim bin al-Fadl, from al-Hasan al-Basri. And Ahmad (24793) narrated it at greater length than here via Ibn Lahi'ah, from Khalid bin Abi 'Imran, from al-Qasim bin Muhammad, from 'A'ishah.
Grading: And Ibn Lahi'ah is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
