Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8936

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: One night we sat conversing with the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we prolonged our conversation. Then we returned to our homes. When morning came, we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night the prophets were presented to me with the followers from their nations. A prophet would pass by with three men of his people with him, a prophet would pass by with a group with him, a prophet would pass by with a few people with him, and a prophet would pass by with not a single one of his people with him. Until Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him) passed before me with a great multitude of the Children of Israel. When I saw them, they impressed me greatly, and I said: O my Lord, who are these? Allah Almighty said: This is your brother Musa bin Imran, and these are his followers from the Children of Israel. I said: O my Lord, then where is my Ummah? It was said to me: Look to your right. And behold, the hills of Makkah were filled with the faces of people. I said: O my Lord, who are these? Allah Almighty said: This is your Ummah. Then I was asked: Are you pleased? I said: O my Lord, I am pleased." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then it was said to me: Along with these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning." The narrator said: (Hearing this) Ukkashah bin Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah, stood up and said: O Prophet of Allah, supplicate to your Lord to make me one of them (the seventy thousand). He (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, make him one of them." Then another man stood up and said: O Prophet of Allah, supplicate to your Lord to make me one of them too. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ukkashah has beaten you to it." The narrator said: Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May my father and mother be your ransom! If you can be among these seventy thousand, then be among them; and if you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the hills; and if you are unable even for that and fall short, then be among the people of the horizon (that is, the general throng), for I saw a great crowd of people there." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I hope that the followers of my Ummah will be a quarter of the people of Paradise." The narrator said: So we said the takbir (Allahu Akbar). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I hope that you will be a third." So we said the takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I hope that you will be half." So we said the takbir. Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "A large company from the earlier peoples, and a large company from the later peoples" [Surah al-Waqi'ah: 39 - 40]. The narrator said: Then the Muslims discussed among themselves about these seventy thousand and said: Do you think they are people who were born in Islam and then continued to act upon it until they died?! This talk of theirs reached the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not so; rather, they are those who do not seek ruqyah, do not get themselves cauterised, do not take bad omens, and (in all their affairs) rely only upon their Lord."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (M) it is "أكثرنا", and that is also correct. "أكرينا الحديث" means: we prolonged the talk and delayed it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "حتى اصاني", which is unintelligible, and apparently it is a distortion. What we have established is taken from the Indian printed edition and from some of the referencing sources.

Note / Clarification: "الظراب" is the plural of "ظرب", meaning: a small hill/mound.

Note / Clarification: (The meaning of يجتلدون is): they will fight one another.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is "strong" (qawi) because of Yahya bin Abi Talib and his shaykh Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Ata'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hasan - i.e. al-Basri - did not hear from 'Imran bin Husayn according to the majority view, but here he is "corroborated" by al-'Ala' bin Ziyad, who is among the trustworthy Successors; he is not known for tadlis, and no one has criticised his narration from 'Imran bin Husayn. Sa'id is "Ibn Abi 'Arubah".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (7/3989) recorded it from Muhammad bin Bakr al-Bursani, and Ibn Hibban (6431) via Muhammad bin Abi 'Adi, both of them from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah with this same chain. Ahmad, in his narrations, stopped it at the words "سبقك بها عكاشة" ('Ukkashah has beaten you to it) (i.e. did not narrate beyond that).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3988) also narrated it from Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Ata', from Sa'id [bin Abi 'Arubah], from Qatadah, from al-Hasan [al-Basri] "alone", from 'Imran.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (6/3806) recorded it via Ma'mar, and (7/3987) and Ibn Hibban (7346) via Hisham al-Dastuwa'i; both of them from Qatadah, from al-Hasan "alone", from 'Imran, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: Hisham's narration goes up to the words "سبقك بها عكاشة" ('Ukkashah has beaten you to it), while Ma'mar mentioned in his narration the story of the seventy thousand who do not seek ruqyah and do not cauterise... etc.
