Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8931

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Day of Resurrection comes, the earth will be stretched out like leather, and Allah Almighty will gather all creatures, that is, humans, jinn, beasts and wild animals. On that day Allah Almighty will establish retribution even among the animals, until the hornless sheep is given retribution from the horned one for its butting. Then when Allah Almighty has finished judging retribution among the animals, He will say to them: Become dust, and they will all become dust. At that time the disbeliever (seeing this scene) will say: "Oh, I wish that I were dust!" [Surah al-Naba': 40]
All its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah) except Abu al-Mughirah, who is unknown (majhul), and the Companion's interpretation (of the Qur'an) has the ruling of a musnad (Prophetic) report.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded "hasan", because of Abu al-Mughirah al-Qawwas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is a Successor (tabi'i); 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah al-A'rabi is alone in narrating from him, and 'Awf is thiqah and well known. Yahya bin Ma'in declared Abu al-Mughirah trustworthy, as is in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (9/439), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (5/565). However, Sulayman al-Taymi criticised him because of his (Abu al-Mughirah's) position (Shi'ism) regarding 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i recorded it in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (1125) via Muhammad bin Ma'mar, from Rawh bin 'Ubadah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: And Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ahwal" (182) and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (30/26) narrated it through several routes from 'Awf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (shahid) by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), "mawquf", which has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) at number (3270), and its chain is sahih.
Details of the narration: The story of the hornless sheep (al-jamma') taking retribution from the horned sheep (al-qarna') is also narrated "marfu'" from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in Sahih Muslim (2582) and elsewhere.
