It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and the Companions had become spread out in their pace of travel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his voice with these two verses: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a tremendous thing"; he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited up to "but the punishment of Allah is severe" [Surah al-Hajj: 1 - 2]. When the Companions heard this, they urged on their mounts and realised that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to say something (important). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what day that is?" They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the day when Adam (peace be upon him) will be called; his Lord will call him and say: O Adam! Bring out the contingent of Hell (those who are to enter Hell). He will say: O my Lord! How many is the contingent of Hell? Allah Almighty will say: From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine will go to the Fire and one to Paradise." Hearing this, the Companions became so despairing and grieved that not a trace of a smile remained on their faces. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this state of his Companions, he said: "Keep doing good deeds and rejoice. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! You are with two creations (Ya'juj and Ma'juj) which increase the number of whatever they are with, and those who perished among the children of Adam and the offspring of Iblis (because of them your proportion will be small)." Then the grief which the people were feeling was somewhat relieved. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do good deeds and receive glad tidings. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Among (other) people you are (in number) just like a mole on the side of a camel, or like a distinctive mark on the foreleg of an animal."
Sa'id bin Abi Arubah has likewise narrated it from Qatadah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This word is thus in the manuscripts, on the pattern of a "plural of paucity" (jam' qillah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (The author) means "Abu Musa al-Zamin", who is Muhammad bin al-Muthanna. His hadith has already appeared with the author under number (2954), narrated by him from Mu'adh bin Hisham, and it contains the verse in full, as the author mentioned here.
Note / Clarification: The wording between the square brackets had dropped out of the manuscripts; we have supplied it from the earlier narrations and the source works of the takhrij.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) "i'lamu" is written in both places, and this is an error.
