It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Mahdi will emerge in the last era of my Ummah. Allah Almighty will provide him with water (through rain), the earth will bring forth its vegetation, he will distribute wealth properly (equally), livestock will be abundant and the Ummah will become great. He will remain for seven or eight years (hajj seasons)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is good (jayyid) and its text is gharib. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sulayman bin 'Ubayd (called al-Naji, and some said al-Sulami) is alone in narrating it from Abu al-Siddiq. More than one narrator narrated from him. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari mentioned him in "al-Tarikh" (4/ 25) and Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" (6/ 392). Ibn Abi Hatim, in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (4/ 129, according to some of its copies), quoted his father (Abu Hatim) as saying he is "saduq" (truthful), and quoted Yahya bin Ma'in as having declared him thiqah. Note / Clarification: We have not found this hadith by this route with anyone other than the author. Note / Clarification: "Al-sihah" means whole and intact, i.e. (wealth) that is neither divided up nor broken into portions. Note / Clarification: "Al-hijaj" means years.
