Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into ''Abd Allah' (in the non-diminutive form). 'Ubayd Allah here is 'al-Qawariri'.
Note / Clarification: This text had dropped out of the manuscripts; we have supplied it from the sources of the takhrij and from the earlier hadith no. (8674).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Ash'ari here is 'Abd Allah bin Qays Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have 'mansuruna', whereas what we have recorded (in the text) is the standard form.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have the words: 'idha kana dhalika kalladhi', which does not make sense. The correct reading is what we have established, and it agrees with the sources of the takhrij.
Grading: The marfu' part of this hadith, concerning 'al-ta'ifah al-mansurah' (the group granted victory), is 'sahih li-ghayrihi', while this chain is weak because of a break between Qatadah and Abu al-Aswad, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (4352).
Reference / Source: Al-Diya' al-Maqdisi narrated it in "al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah" [1/(142)] by way of Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili, from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: In it are the words: "Soon no non-Arab will remain in the land of the Arabs!"
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it in his "Musnad" [see: al-Matalib al-'Aliyah (4352)] from Mu'adh bin Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Umar) [2/814] from Muhammad bin Bashshar and Qatadah bin Sa'd bin Qatadah, from Mu'adh bin Hisham, and he declared its chain sahih.
Reference / Source: This hadith has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) under no. (8674) by way of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Harithi from Mu'adh bin Hisham, but its second part was not there.
Reference / Source: Isma'il bin 'Ayyash narrated it, as found in al-Tabari [2/817 and 818], once from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah, and another time from Nafi' bin 'Umar and Sa'id bin Bashir, all three of them from Qatadah, who said: 'Abd Allah bin Abi al-Aswad narrated to us, saying: We set off… (to the end). In al-Tabari's version it is mentioned that they sat with 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar and (then) said to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Your son 'Abd Allah told us such-and-such.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Isma'il bin 'Ayyash has been criticised by the hadith scholars and he is not a strong hafiz, and, as you see, there is disagreement over what he narrated in this report. Moreover, this 'Nafi' bin 'Umar' is unknown (majhul), and 'Sa'id bin Bashir' is weak. Furthermore, this ''Abd Allah bin Abi al-Aswad' is also unknown; we could not find a biography of him, and no son named 'Abd Allah is known for the famous Successor Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr narrated it in "Bayan al-'Ilm wa Fadlihi" (2246) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in (141) by way of Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb from Mu'adh bin Hisham, with this same chain, in abridged form containing only the account of 'al-ta'ifah al-mansurah' (the group granted victory).
Grading: This part of the hadith is sahih by virtue of its supporting reports.
Reference / Source: It has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) under no. (8594) by way of Sulayman bin al-Rabi' from 'Umar.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah in Musnad Ahmad [14/(8274)] supports it. See the reference to its other supporting reports there.
Note / Clarification: As for 'Dhu al-Khalasah', it is mentioned in the marfu' hadith of Abu Hurayrah: "The Hour will not be established until the buttocks of the women of Daws sway around Dhu al-Khalasah." It was an idol which the tribe of Daws worshipped in the Jahiliyyah at a place called 'Tabalah'.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (7116) and Muslim (2906) narrated it.
Reference / Source: In the hadith of Jarir bin 'Abd Allah al-Bajali, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to demolish Dhu al-Khalasah and said: "Will you not relieve me of Dhu al-Khalasah?" It was a house of worship among the tribe of Khath'am called 'the Yemeni Ka'bah'. Al-Bukhari (3020) and Muslim (2476) narrated it.
Note / Clarification: The land of Khath'am is Tabalah and its surroundings, in the south of the Arabian Peninsula near 'Bishah'.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Kalbi said in "Kitab al-Asnam" (p. 35) concerning Dhu al-Khalasah: The tribes of Khath'am, Bajilah, Azd al-Sarah and the clans of Hawazin near them, and the Arabs living in their lands at Tabalah, used to venerate it and bring offerings to it.
Note / Clarification: We say: The 'Banu 'Amir bin Sa'sa'ah' mentioned in the report are also from the tribe of Hawazin.
