Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih, if Allah wills; its narrators are trustworthy to the last of them, except that there is disagreement over it on Sufyan (who is Ibn 'Uyaynah). 'Abdullah bin al-Mubarak narrated it from him, with the author (al-Hakim) here and with Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (1728), and he made it the hadith of al-Hasan bin Muhammad, from the freedwoman (mawlah) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from him; so on this basis she is a Companion.
Reference / Source: A group narrated it from Ibn 'Uyaynah, among them: Nu'aym also in "al-Fitan" (1733), al-Humaydi in his "Musnad" (266), Ibn Abi Shaybah in his "Musannaf" (5/42-43), Ahmad bin Hanbal in his "Musnad" (40/24133), Sadaqah bin al-Fadl with al-Sahmi in "Tarikh Jurjan" (pp. 318-319), and Yahya al-Himmani with al-Kalabadhi in "Ma'ani al-Akhbar" (p. 316); they made it the hadith of al-Hasan bin Muhammad, from a woman, from 'A'ishah.
Note / Clarification: With Ahmad it occurs as "from his wife ('an imra'atihi)", and we think this can only be a mistake.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This does not make the narration of Ibn al-Mubarak defective. This woman from whom al-Hasan bin Muhammad narrated, although she mentioned that she was with the Mother of the Believers when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to her, did not hear his words (peace and blessings be upon him), as is made clear by the narration of Sharik bin 'Abdullah al-Nakha'i from Jami' bin Abi Rashid with Ahmad (44/26527) and al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad" (766, Bughyat al-Bahith). In it he mentioned from al-Hasan bin Muhammad that he said: A woman of the Ansar, who is alive today, narrated to me, saying: I entered upon Umm Salamah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to her as if he were angry, so I covered myself with the sleeve of my arm. He said something that I did not understand, so I said: O Mother of the Believers, it seemed to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in angry? She said: Yes; did you not hear what he said? I said: What did he say? She said: He said … and she mentioned it.
Important point: This makes clear that she heard it only from the Mother of the Believers, and she named her as Umm Salamah; and disagreement or doubt about the name of the Companion of the hadith does no harm.
Reference / Source: From Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah it was narrated by Ishaq bin Rahwayh in his "Musnad" (1108), Ishaq bin Isma'il al-Taliqani and al-Hasan bin al-Sabbah with Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-'Uqubat" (257), and Mahmud bin Adam with al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7194); they dropped the unnamed (mubham) woman from its chain and made it the hadith of al-Hasan bin Muhammad from 'A'ishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And their narration is shadh (anomalous).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya also recorded it in "al-'Uqubat" (3), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (23/891) and "al-Awsat" (2089), and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (10/218), through several routes from Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, from Muhammad bin Talhah al-Yami, from Zubayd al-Yami, from Jami' bin Abi Rashid, from Umm Mubashshir, from Umm Salamah.
Grading: The narrators of this chain are trustworthy.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for this Umm Mubashshir, if Sharik preserved his hadith correctly and she is a woman of the Ansar, then she is Umm Mubashshir al-Ansariyyah, who was the wife of Zayd bin Harithah and is a Companion. In this report, between her and Jami' there is al-Hasan bin Muhammad al-Hashimi, so perhaps some narrator dropped him from the chain.
Reference / Source: The meaning of this report was recorded by Ibn Hibban (7314), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (5/140) and al-Bayhaqi (7193) through 'Amr bin 'Uthman al-Raqqi, from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And 'Amr bin 'Uthman is weak.
