أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الأصبَهاني الزاهد، حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن أُورْمةَ، حدثنا الحسين بن حفص، حدثنا سفيان، عن حَبيب بن أبي ثابت، عن القاسم بن الحارث، عن عبد الله بن عُتْبة، عن أبي مسعود الأنصاري قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "لا يزالُ هذا الأمرُ فيكم وأنتم وُلاتُه ما لم تُحدِثوا أعمالًا تَنزِعُه منكم، فإذا فعلتُم ذلك سَلَّطَ اللهُ عليكم شِرارَ خلقِه، فالتَحَوْكم كما يُلتَحى القضيبُ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This matter (of rule) will remain among you, and you will remain its governors, as long as you do not do deeds that strip it away from you. When you do that, Allah will set over you the worst of His creation, who will peel you apart just as the bark of a branch is peeled off."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة القاسم بن الحارث: واسمه القاسم بن محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن الحارث بن هشام، نسب هنا إلى جدِّه.
Grading: Because of the "jahalah" (being unknown) of al-Qasim bin al-Harith, its chain is weak.
Narrator identification: His (full) name is al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham; here he is attributed to his grandfather.
وأخرجه أحمد 37/ (22355) عن معاوية بن هشام، و (22356) و (22361) عن أبي نعيم، كلاهما عن سفيان الثوري، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (37/22355) from Mu'awiyah bin Hisham, and (22356, 22361) from Abu Nu'aym. Both of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد أيضًا 28/ (17069) من طريق شعبة، عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت، عن عبيد الله بن القاسم، أو القاسم بن عبيد الله بن عتبة، عن أبي مسعود.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (28/17069) also narrated it by the route of Shu'bah, from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from 'Ubayd Allah bin al-Qasim (or al-Qasim bin 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Utbah), from Abu Mas'ud.
قوله: "التحَوْكم" من الْتَحيت الشجرة: إذا أخذت قِشرها.
Note / Clarification: The word "al-tahawkum" is derived from "iltahaytu al-shajarah", which means: when you have stripped the bark of a tree.
