Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8719

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a boy was born to the brother of the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and they named him al-Walid. When this was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have named him after the names of your Pharaohs. There will certainly be a man in this Ummah called al-Walid, who will prove to be worse for this Ummah than Pharaoh was for his people." Imam al-Zuhri says: If al-Walid bin Yazid becomes caliph, then he is the one meant; otherwise it is al-Walid bin Abd al-Malik.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it; and (according to the author of al-Mustadrak) this is without any doubt or uncertainty al-Walid bin Yazid.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy) except Nu'aym bin Hammad, who is saduq (truthful) and hasan in hadith, and he has been corroborated on the basic hadith. However, in this chain there is a variation over Imam al-Awza'i ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Amr).
Grading: What is preserved (the preponderant view) here is that this report is narrated from Imam al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab as "mursal" (without the intermediary of a Companion).
Technical note: The mention of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the chain here - if it is preserved in the manuscript - is a "wahm" (mistake) by Nu'aym bin Hammad or someone below him, because in Nu'aym bin Hammad's own book "al-Fitan" (no. 328) this hadith is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab as mursal only, and Abu Hurayrah is not mentioned in it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, Muhammad bin Khalid al-Saksaki - who is one of the thiqah narrators - also narrated this report as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/505), and by his route Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (63/322-323), from al-Walid bin Muslim with this same chain, and he did not mention Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also, Bishr bin Bakr al-Tinnisi (in al-Bayhaqi: 6/505 and Ibn 'Asakir: 63/323), and Hiql bin Ziyad and Muhammad bin Kathir al-Missisi (in Ibn 'Asakir: 63/323) narrated it in the same way. All three of them (Bishr, Hiql, Muhammad) report it from Imam al-Awza'i, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab as "mursal", except that Muhammad bin Kathir did not mention Sa'id bin al-Musayyab in it.
Grading: Imam al-Bayhaqi said: This is a "hasan mursal".
Details of the narration: Imam Ma'mar narrated it in his "Jami'" (no. 19861) - and this report is also found in "Amali 'Abd al-Razzaq" (no. 172) - from al-Zuhri with a similar meaning, but he did not mention Sa'id bin al-Musayyab in it.
Reference / Source: Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) cited it in "Fath al-Bari" (18/624) from the "Amali" of 'Abd al-Razzaq with Sa'id bin al-Musayyab mentioned in it!
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin 'Ayyash also narrated it from Imam al-Awza'i, but there is a variation over him in it. Abu al-Mughirah 'Abd al-Quddus bin al-Hajjaj narrated it from him (in Musnad Ahmad: 1/109) and made it Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Mughirah was contradicted by Isma'il bin Abi Isma'il al-Mu'addib (in the "Musnad" of al-Harith bin Abi Usamah, no. 804 - Bughyat al-Bahith), who narrated it from Isma'il bin 'Ayyash as "mursal" and did not mention 'Umar in it.
Grading: Although this Isma'il al-Mu'addib is a weak narrator, his narration is the correct one because it agrees with the other narrations, and mentioning 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in it is a mistake.
Grading: Ibn Hibban mentioned this hadith of 'Umar in "al-Majruhin" (1/125) in the biography of Isma'il bin 'Ayyash and said: "This report is false; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say this, nor did 'Umar narrate it, nor did Sa'id relate it, nor did al-Zuhri narrate it, nor is it from the hadith of Imam al-Awza'i with this chain."
Reference / Source: And Ibn al-Jawzi followed (agreed with) Ibn Hibban in "al-Mawdu'at" (1/244, no. 330).
Important point: Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in "al-Fath" (18/624) and in "al-Qawl al-Musaddad", objected to both of them (Ibn Hibban and Ibn al-Jawzi) on the grounds that this hadith has a "basis" through routes other than Isma'il bin 'Ayyash, as has already passed. Then he said: If Sa'id bin al-Musayyab received it from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), then it meets the condition of the Sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is supported by the fact that there is a "shahid" (supporting report) for it from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), which Ibrahim al-Harbi narrated in "Gharib al-Hadith" by the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata', from Zaynab bint Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah, that she said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, and with me was a boy from the family of al-Mughirah whose name was al-Walid. He asked: "Who is this?" I said: al-Walid. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have taken al-Walid as something dear; change his name, for there will soon be in this Ummah a Pharaoh who will be called al-Walid."
