Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8697

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Indeed, you are in a time in which scholars are many and orators are few, and those who give (in the way of Allah) are many. In this age the prayer is short and the sermon is long. So shorten the sermon (in accordance with the Sunnah) and lengthen the prayer. And indeed some eloquence is (as effective as) magic. Whoever seeks the Hereafter (inevitably) harms his worldly life, and whoever seeks the world harms his Hereafter. O my people! Sacrifice this perishing life for the life that remains.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although the narrator "Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Awramah" is not known, he is not alone in this narration. And (the other narrators) al-Hasan bin Hafs and Abu Qays al-Awdi ('Abd al-Rahman bin Tharwan) are both saduq (truthful) and "hasan al-hadith".
Reference / Source: Hannad narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (670) from Qabisah bin 'Uqbah, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (8566) by way of Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, both of them from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Waki' narrated it in abridged form in "al-Zuhd" (70) with the words: "Whoever wants this world", and by way of him Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/287) and Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "al-Hilyah" (1381); and al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10159) by way of 'Abdullah bin Numayr. Both of them (Waki' and Ibn Numayr) narrate it from Sufyan with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Waki' (72) also narrated it in abridged form, and from him Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/300), from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (3787), and by way of him al-Marwazi in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (1038) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9496), narrated from Ma'mar, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Abu al-Ahwas 'Awf bin Malik, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: "You are in a time in which the preachers are few and the scholars many; they lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon. And a time will soon come upon you in which the preachers will be many and the scholars few; they will lengthen the sermon and delay the prayer."
Grading: This chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A narration with the same meaning was narrated by Imam Malik in "al-Muwatta'" (1/173) from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, that 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to a man, and then he mentioned the narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is munqati', because Yahya did not reach the time of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: By way of Imam Malik it was narrated by Ja'far al-Firyabi in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (108), al-Mustaghfiri, also in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (268), Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (317) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4646).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This saying, "Shorten the sermon and lengthen the prayer, and indeed some eloquence is (as powerful as) magic", has been narrated in similar form as marfu' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of 'Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Muslim (869) and elsewhere. It has already passed with the author under number (5788), but there without the words: "إنَّ من البيان سحرًا".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And this saying, "Whoever wants the Hereafter will harm his worldly life", has also been narrated in similar form as marfu' in the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), which has already passed with the author under numbers (8050) and (8095). There is no problem with the narrators of its chain, except that it is munqati'. However, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) serves as a supporting report for it, found in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Zuhd" (161) with a hasan chain.
