Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8678

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you heard of a city, one side of which is on land and the other side in the sea?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until seventy thousand of Banu Ishaq attack it. When they reach it, they will encamp; they will neither fight with weapons nor shoot arrows, but they will say (aloud): 'La ilaha illallah wallahu akbar' (There is no true deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), and one of its sides will fall. (The narrator Thawr said: I think he meant the side facing the land.) Then they will say it a second time: 'La ilaha illallah wallahu akbar', and its other side will fall. Then they will say it a third time: 'La ilaha illallah wallahu akbar', and the way will be opened for them. They will enter it and take spoils, and while they are dividing the spoils, suddenly a caller will cry out that the Dajjal has emerged, so they will leave everything and go back."
Imam al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This city is Constantinople, and it is authentically established that its conquest will be close to the establishment of the Hour.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name has been corrupted into "Yazid" (with a ya' at its start); it has been corrected from manuscripts (K) and (M) (i.e. Zayd).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is "Zayd bin Thawr al-Dili".

Grading: Its chain is "sahih", but the narrator's statement in it, "from Banu Ishaq", is an error, as will come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Ghayth refers to "Salim al-Madani", the freed slave of 'Abdullah bin Muti' al-Qurashi.
Reference / Source: Muslim (2920) narrated it from Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, from Thawr bin Zayd al-Dili, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: Regarding (the wording of the hadith) "seventy thousand of Banu Ishaq will attack it", al-Qadi 'Iyad says in "Ikmal al-Mu'lim" (8/464), which al-Nawawi quoted in "Sharh Muslim": "It is like this (Banu Ishaq) in all the manuscripts. Some scholars said: the known and preserved wording is 'Banu Isma'il', and this is what the hadith and its context indicate, because what is meant is the Arabs and the Muslims, as shown by the hadith in which the city is named as 'Constantinople'." End of quote.
Reference / Source: He means the hadith of Abu Hurayrah found in Muslim (2897), which will come later with the author under number (8696).

Note / Clarification: The text is like this in our manuscripts and the speaker is not named, whereas al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" has the word "يُقال" (it is said), which is more correct. It means that this is the speech of the author (al-Hakim), not part of the hadith, nor the statement of any narrator.
