Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8638

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three men will fight near your treasure, all of them sons of a caliph, then it will not go to any one of them. Then black banners will appear from the direction of the east, and they will fight you in a way that no people have ever fought." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned some matters and said: "When you see him, pledge allegiance to him, even if you have to crawl over snow, for he is the caliph of Allah, the Mahdi."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (M) and (B) the word is "yuqtal" (with a single ta'), whereas the text we have established ("yaqtatil") is taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis", and it is what agrees with the sources of takhrij.

Grading: This hadith is "da'if and mudtarib" (weak and inconsistent). It hinges on "Khalid bin Mihran al-Hadhdha'", and this hadith is known through him, as is understood from the words of his student, the imam and authority Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, which Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal related in "al-'Ilal" (in the narration of his son 'Abd Allah, 2443). Although the majority of hadith scholars consider Khalid trustworthy, Ibn 'Ulayyah said: "Khalid used to narrate it but we paid no attention to it"; then Ibn 'Ulayyah declared his matter (i.e. this hadith of the black banners) weak. We (the editors) say: perhaps it was inserted into his narrations (i.e. it got mixed up in his memory), because his other student, the authority Hammad bin Zayd, indicated that his memory changed at the end of his life. Al-'Uqayli related in "al-Du'afa'" (1/ 565) from Yahya bin Adam, who said: I asked Hammad bin Zayd: "What is the matter with the hadith of Khalid al-Hadhdha'?" He said: "He came to us once from al-Sham, and we found his memory strange (poor)." We say: moreover, there is also disagreement over the wording of this hadith and over whether it is marfu' or mawquf, as will come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the narration of Sharik bin 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i, which he brought from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an from Abu Qilabah, found in the Musnad of Ahmad (37/ 22387) and elsewhere, the most likely view is that it is a "takhlit" (confusion) of Sharik, because he had a poor memory; and al-Dhahabi mentioned it in "al-Mizan" in the biography of 'Ali bin Zayd and said: "I consider it munkar." 'Ali bin Zayd is also weak, and his narrations include strange and munkar ones.
Details of the narration: As for the narration of Sufyan (al-Thawri) from Khalid al-Hadhdha', Ibn Majah (4084), al-Bazzar (4163), al-Ruyani (637), al-Mustaghfiri (54), Abu 'Amr al-Dani (548) and al-Bayhaqi (6/ 515) reported it via various routes from 'Abd al-Razzaq from Sufyan al-Thawri, similar to the author's narration. The apparent sense of this narration indicates that there is a separation (gap) between the black banners and the Mahdi, because there is a break between the mention of the two, understood from the narrator's words "then he mentioned something". In narrations other than the author's the words are "then he mentioned something that I do not remember". Except for the narration of Ahmad bin Mansur al-Ramadi, which he related from 'Abd al-Razzaq (with al-Dani), in which the wording is: "… then the kingship will not pass to any one of them; then the black banners will come from the direction of Khurasan, so go to them even if you have to crawl on your knees, for among them will be the caliph of Allah, the Mahdi." In this narration the Mahdi is made one of the people of the black banners.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Similarly, 'Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Ata' al-Khaffaf narrated it from Khalid al-Hadhdha', as will come with the author later at no. (8741), but he made it "mawquf" on Thawban (i.e. reported it as the Companion's own statement), with the words: "When you see the black banners that come out from the direction of Khurasan, then join them even if crawling, for among them will be the caliph of Allah, the Mahdi." Thus 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Khaffaf contradicted Sufyan in both the chain and the text. 'Abd al-Wahhab is "la ba'sa bihi" (acceptable), but he does not reach Sufyan's rank in reliability.
Grading: The chain of Sufyan al-Thawri's hadith was declared "sahih" by al-Bazzar in his "Musnad", al-Qurtubi in "al-Tadhkirah" (p. 1201) and Ibn Kathir in "al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah" (19/ 62)! (Whereas, due to the defects mentioned above, this is not correct.)
Grading: These black banners are also mentioned in a marfu' hadith of Abu Hurayrah found in Ahmad (14/ 8775) and al-Tirmidhi (2269), but its chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan).
Grading: They are also mentioned in another hadith from Ibn Mas'ud in Ibn Majah (4082), but its chain is also weak and not authentic. A narration like it will come with the author at (8640). (In summary,) nothing in this chapter is established as "sahih", and Allah the Exalted knows best.
