أخبرنا أبو عبد الله الصَّفّار، حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم الأصبهاني، حدثنا الحسين بن حفص، عن سفيان، عن أبي حصين، عن عبد الرحمن بن بِشْر (1) الأنصاري قال: أتى رجلٌ بادِي (2) ابن مسعود، فأكبَّ عليه، فقال: يا أبا عبد الرحمن، متي أَضِلُّ وأنا أعلم؟ قال: إذا كان عليك أمراء إذا أطعتهم أدخلوك النار، وإذا عصيتهم قتلوك (3). وهذا موقوفٌ صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه. قال الحاكم ﵀: هذه أحاديث ذكرها عبد الله بن وَهْب في الملاحم، وعَلَوتُ فيها فأخرجتها، وإن كانت غير مسانيد:

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Bishr al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), leaned over towards him and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! When will I go astray despite having knowledge?" He replied: "When rulers are placed over you such that if you obey them, they will admit you into the Fire, and if you disobey them, they will kill you."
This report is mawquf (a Companion's statement) and its chain is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: These are reports that Abdullah bin Wahb mentioned in (his book) al-Malahim; I obtained them through a higher chain, so I have recorded them, even though they are not musnad (traced back to the Prophet).

(1) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: بشير، بزيادة ياء فيه، وعبد الرحمن بن بشر هذا: هو عبد الرحمن بن بشر بن مسعود الأنصاري، أبو بشر المدني.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted and written as "Bashir" (with an added ya').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-Rahman bin Bishr here is "'Abd al-Rahman bin Bishr bin Mas'ud al-Ansari, Abu Bishr al-Madani".
(2) أي: من أهل البادية.
Note / Clarification: (Badw means) that is, the people of the desert (inhabitants of rural areas).
(3) خبر حسن، ومحمد بن إبراهيم الأصبهاني - وهو ابن أورمة - وإن كان مجهولًا كما سبق مرارًا، إلا أنه لم ينفرد به.
Grading: This report is "hasan". The narrator Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Asbahani (who is Ibn Awramah), although unknown as has passed repeatedly, is not alone in this narration.
فقد رواه وكيع عند ابن أبي شيبة في "المصنف" 15/ 49 عن سفيان الثوري، بهذا الإسناد.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For Waki' narrated it in Ibn Abi Shaybah's "al-Musannaf" (15/ 49) from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain (which supports it).
وهو إسناد حسن من أجل عبد الرحمن بن بشر، فقد روى عنه جمع وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات".
Grading: This chain is "hasan" on account of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Bishr, since a group narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
وأبو حصين: هو عثمان بن عاصم الأسدي.
