It is narrated from Hayyah bint Abi Hayyah that she said: A man came to me at midday. I asked: O servant of Allah! What do you need? He said: My companion and I set out in search of our lost camels, and I have come here to rest in the shade and to drink something. So I got up and offered him some sour buttermilk and a little sour milk. Then, looking at him closely, I asked: O servant of Allah! Who are you? He said: I am Abu Bakr, that companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of whom you have heard. (Hayyah says:) Then I mentioned the tribe of Khath'am and our fighting one another in the Jahiliyyah, and the affection and love that Allah Almighty granted (through Islam), and, mentioning the ropes of the tents, interlaced the fingers together to show it. She says: I asked: O servant of Allah! How long will this state of the people (peace and affection) remain like this? He said: "As long as your leaders (imams) remain upright." I asked: What is meant by the imams? He said: "Have you not seen the tents of a tribe, that they have a chief whom the people follow and obey? So as long as those chiefs remain upright (this matter too will remain upright)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction: In the manuscripts this word was corrupted and written as "Bakrah"; the correction was made from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (9260), and it is also correct in the sources of the takhrij.
Grading of the chain: Its chain up to Hayyah bint Abi Hayyah is strong, but this Hayyah is not known except in this report, and Abu Zur'ah is alone in narrating from her. Analysis: However, this report is authentically established through another route, and in it the woman is named Zaynab, as will come. Takhrij: It was narrated by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 2/ 864 via Abd Allah bin al-Hakam from Azhar bin Sa'd, with this same chain. It was also narrated by al-Darimi (216), by Musaddad and Ahmad bin Mani' in their Musnads (as in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" 2128), and by al-Khatib in "al-Talkhis" 2/ 864-865, via several routes from Abu Awn Abd Allah bin Awn. 11/ 280 - 281. Supporting reports: A similar report was narrated by Qays bin Abi Hazim, who said: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to a woman of the tribe of Ahmas called Zaynab... (the full hadith). Al-Bukhari recorded it in his "Sahih" (3834), and others. See further "Fath al-Bari" 11/ 280-281. Linguistic note: "Al-dayhah": milk mixed with water. Linguistic note: "Al-hiwa": a group of houses close to one another.
