Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8564

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ahead of you are tribulations like pieces of the dark night, in which a man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, and a believer in the evening and become a disbeliever by the morning. In these tribulations the one sitting will be better than the one standing, the one standing will be better than the one walking, and the one walking will be better than the one running." The Companions said: What do you command us? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be the ahlas of your houses (the mats spread in houses, that is, stay secluded at home)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Likewise, Abu Bakrah al-Ansari and Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them both) have also narrated it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih by virtue of its routes and supporting reports; however, there is softness (weakness) in this chain (under discussion).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is that Abu Kabshah (who is al-Sadusi al-Basri) is not known; no one narrated from him except Asim al-Ahwal, and his being declared trustworthy is not reported from anyone. Moreover, there is disagreement over whether this hadith is marfu' or mawquf, as is made clear in the Musnad of Ahmad 32/(19662) and Abu Dawud (4262), where it is narrated by way of Affan bin Muslim from Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (19663) and (19730), Abu Dawud (4259), Ibn Majah (3961), al-Tirmidhi (2204) and Ibn Hibban (5962) recorded it with similar meaning, with a "hasan chain", by way of Huzayl bin Shurahbil, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, as "marfu'". Some of them also abridged it, and Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: See its other supporting reports in the "Musnad of Ahmad" (19662), and see also the narration after it.
Note / Clarification: His words "أحلاس بيوتكم" mean: become ones who cling to your houses the way a floor-mat clings (to its place).
