Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8526

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that al-Harith bin Abi Rabi'ah and Abdullah bin Safwan came to her - and I was with them too - and the two of them asked her about the army that will be swallowed up by the earth. This was in the days (of the caliphate) of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "One seeking refuge will take refuge in the Sanctuary (the Ka'bah), and an army will be sent against him; when they reach a barren plain of the earth (al-Bayda'), they will be swallowed up by the earth." I said: O Messenger of Allah! What about the one who joined (the army) unwillingly? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He too will be swallowed up with them, but on the Day of Resurrection he will be raised according to his intention." Then she (Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One seeking refuge will take refuge in the House of Allah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it in their books.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir is "Ibn Abd al-Hamid".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4289) recorded it from Uthman bin Abi Shaybah with this same chain, but he abridged it.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (44/26487) recorded it in full from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid, and Imam Muslim (2882/4) through several routes from Jarir.
Note / Clarification: Hence al-Hakim's including this hadith as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part (because it is in Sahih Muslim).
Reference / Source: Muslim (2882/5) and Ibn Hibban (6756) also recorded it by way of Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Abd al-Aziz bin Rufay', likewise.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded something similar (26702) by way of Abu Yunus al-Bahili, and (26747) by way of Hatim bin Abi Saghirah; both of them narrate it from "al-Muhajir" (Abu Yunus called him "al-Makki" and Hatim called him "Ibn al-Qibtiyyah"), and he narrates from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is a difference of opinion about this "Muhajir": is he Ubaydullah himself, or someone else? As explained in the annotation on the "Musnad of Ahmad".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (26475), Ibn Majah (4065) and al-Tirmidhi (2171) recorded it in abridged form by way of Nafi' bin Jubayr, from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), which is in al-Bukhari (2118) and Ibn Hibban (6755).
General principle: "Al-Bayda'" is a flat, wide, barren land in which there is nothing (no buildings, trees, etc.).
