Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8474

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a Bedouin came and said: O Prophet of Allah, I have a brother who is in pain. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is his pain?" He said: He is afflicted with madness (possession). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him to me." So he brought him and seated him before him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited ruqyah over him with Surah al-Fatihah, the first four verses of Surah al-Baqarah, these two verses: "And your god is one God" [al-Baqarah: 163], Ayat al-Kursi, the last three verses of Surah al-Baqarah, this verse of Surah Al Imran: "Allah bears witness that there is no god except Him" [Al Imran: 18], this verse of Surah al-A'raf: "Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth" [al-A'raf: 54], the end of Surah al-Mu'minun: "So exalted is Allah, the King, the Truth" [al-Mu'minun: 116], this verse of Surah al-Jinn: "And exalted is the majesty of our Lord; He has taken neither a wife nor a son" [al-Jinn: 3], the first ten verses of Surah al-Saffat, the last three verses of Surah al-Hashr, "Say: He is Allah, the One," and the Mu'awwidhatayn. Then the man stood up (healed) as though he had never suffered from anything at all.
The two Shaykhs used all the narrators of this hadith as evidence except Abu Janab al-Kalbi, and this hadith is preserved (mahfuz) and sahih (authentic), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "'Amr".

Note / Clarification: The word "awwal" is missing from manuscripts (Z), (K), (M) and from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis", and in manuscript (B) it has been corrupted into "akhir".
Important point: The text as established has been taken from the sources of takhrij, and the context of the passage also requires it.

Note / Clarification: The portion from the words "wa hatayn al-ayatayn" up to here is missing from manuscript (B).

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Abu Janab (who is Yahya bin Abi Hayyah al-Kalbi), and for this reason al-Dhahabi declared it weak in "al-Talkhis" and said: This hadith is "munkar". (Identification of the narrator): 'Abd Allah bin 'Isa is "the grandson of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Da'awat al-Kabir" (595) through the route of al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Yusuf bin Ya'qub al-Qadi, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in his additions (ziyadat) to "al-Musnad" (35) (21174), and through his route Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (177), from Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, with the same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Janab was inconsistent (idtirab) in it: 'Abdah bin Sulayman narrated it from him, as found with Ibn Majah (3549) and al-Tabarani in "al-Du'a" (1080), from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from his father Abu Layla, who said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he mentioned the hadith. Thus he made it part of the musnad of Abu Layla al-Ansari and dropped the intermediary between him and 'Abd al-Rahman.
Details of the narration: And Salih bin 'Umar al-Wasiti narrated it from him, as found with Abu Ya'la (1594), and from him Ibn al-Sunni in "al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (632), from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from a man, from his father, who said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)… and he mentioned it.
