It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever a person complained of some ailment, or had an ulcer or a wound, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would gesture with his finger like this (and Abu Bakr, the narrator, placed his index finger on the ground and then raised it) and say: 'Bismillah, turbatu ardina, bi-riqati ba'dina, yushfa saqimuna bi-idhni rabbina' (In the name of Allah, the soil of our land, with the saliva of some of us, so that our sick one may be cured by the permission of our Lord).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it!

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Abu Bakr is the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim) in this hadith.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Sufyan is Ibn 'Uyaynah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ahmad 41/ (44617), al-Bukhari (5745) and (5746), Muslim (2194), Abu Dawud (3895), Ibn Majah (3521), al-Nasa'i (7508) and (10795), and Ibn Hibban (2973) narrated it through various routes from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this same chain. Important point: (Despite its being in the collections of the two Shaykhs) al-Hakim's including it in the Mustadrak is an oversight on his part. Note / Clarification: Imam al-Nawawi said Reference / Source: in "Sharh Muslim": The majority of scholars said that "our land" (ardina) here means the whole earth, and some said it means the land of Madinah specifically, because of its blessing. And "al-riqah" (spittle) is less in quantity than "al-riq". General principle: (Imam al-Nawawi) says: The meaning of the hadith is that he (the one performing ruqyah) puts some of his own saliva on his index finger, then places it on the earth so that some soil sticks to it, then wipes it over the wounded or ailing spot, and says these words (of supplication) while wiping. And Allah knows best.
