Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8465

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade impure (khabith) medicine.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Impure medicine means, without doubt, wine itself. And the two Shaykhs agreed upon this narration of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Indeed, Allah Almighty has not placed your cure in what He has made unlawful for you." And Muslim alone also recorded this hadith: "Indeed, it (wine) is not a medicine; rather, it is itself a disease."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq. Abu Nu'aym is al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ahmad 13/ (8048) and 16/ (10194), Abu Dawud (3870), Ibn Majah (3459) and al-Tirmidhi (2045) recorded it through various routes from Yunus bin Abi Ishaq, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: And see the details that passed at numbers (7699) and (7700).

Important point: Al-Hakim's (may Allah have mercy on him) attributing it to the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) is a "dhuhul" (oversight) on his part, because it is not found with either of them "musnad" (with a connected chain); rather, only al-Bukhari mentioned it in his "Sahih" as "mu'allaq", without a chain, before hadith number (5614).
Details of the narration: As for the hadith of al-Thawri, Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in "al-Musannaf" (17097) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9714) and (9716); as for the hadith of Shu'bah, we did not find it. This hadith has already passed with the author at number (7699) via al-A'mash, from Shaqiq bin Salamah Abu Wa'il, from Abdullah bin Mas'ud, so see its full takhrij there.

Note / Clarification: It is in (Muslim's) "Sahih" at number (1984). See its full takhrij in "Musnad Ahmad" 31/ (18862).
