Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8461

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has cupping (hijamah) done on a Wednesday or a Saturday and then is afflicted with leprosy (white patches), let him blame no one but himself."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts and in "al-Ithaf" (18677) this name is corrupted into "al-Suddi"; the correct name was restored from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak". The preserved (mahfuz) position is that this is a hadith of al-Zuhri, not of al-Suddi, and it occurs correctly in the other sources of takhrij.

Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan) because of Sulayman bin Arqam, for he is "matruk al-hadith", and for this reason al-Dhahabi declared it defective (ma'lul) in "al-Talkhis". (Identifying the narrator): Abu Muslim is Ibrahim bin Abdullah al-Kashshi.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Bayhaqi 9/ 340 recorded it via Abdullah bin Ibrahim bin Masi, from Abu Muslim al-Kashshi, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Bazzar (7800) and (7807) recorded it from Muhammad bin Ma'mar, from al-Hajjaj bin Minhal, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (508) via Dawud bin al-Zibriqan, from Sulayman al-Raqashi, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri.
Note / Clarification: In its printed edition "al-Zibriqan" is corrupted into "al-Zubayr qala".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Dawud is "matruk al-hadith" and a "mudallis", and Sulayman (who is Ibn Arqam) is not known as "al-Raqashi", so this is one of Dawud's acts of tadlis.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Adi recorded it in "al-Kamil" 3/ 251 - and through his route Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (1726) - via Isma'il bin Ayyash, from Sulayman bin Arqam and Ibn Sam'an, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah or from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Sam'an, who corroborated Sulayman, is in fact "Abdullah bin Ziyad bin Sulayman bin Sam'an al-Makhzumi", one of the abandoned (matruk) narrators, and Malik and Abu Dawud accused him of lying.
Important point: The preserved (mahfuz) version of this report from al-Zuhri is "mursal" - and al-Zuhri's mursal reports are almost "worth nothing" (shibh la shay'). This is how Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated it from him in his
Reference / Source: "Jami'" (19816), and through his route Abu Dawud in "al-Marasil" (451). Then Abu Dawud said: "This has also been narrated with a connected chain (musnad), but it is not sahih."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Awn, the freedman (mawla) of Umm Hakim (who is majhul), also narrated it from al-Zuhri as "mursal", as recorded by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (2911).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm recorded it in his "Hadith" (145) via Shu'ayb bin Ishaq, from al-Hasan bin al-Salt, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah. Here he narrated it with al-Zuhri dropped (isqat). Al-Tabarani recorded another portion of the hadith in "al-Awsat" (3300) and mentioned "al-Zuhri" in the chain between al-Hasan bin al-Salt and Ibn al-Musayyib, and said: No one narrated this hadith from al-Zuhri except al-Hasan bin al-Salt (a shaykh from the people of Syria).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: the condition of this Ibn al-Salt has not become clear to us, since we did not find a biography of him, so he is "majhul". Al-Bayhaqi pointed to this route in his "Sunan" 9/ 340 and declared it weak.
Note / Clarification: Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned three more hadiths in "al-Mawdu'at", (1725), (1727) and (1728), which after verification prove to be fabricated (mawdu') reports, so we will not occupy ourselves with citing them.
