Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abbad bin Mansur is weak and commits tadlis; he concealed two narrators (by tadlis) in this report. Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan asked him (as in al-Uqayli's
Reference / Source: "al-Du'afa'" 2/ 635-636) from whom he had heard this hadith, and he said: Ibn Abi Yahya narrated it to me from Dawud bin al-Husayn, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas.
Important point: We say: this Ibn Abi Yahya is in fact "Ibrahim bin Muhammad al-Aslami", and he is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ahmad 5/ (3320) recorded it in similar form (bi-nahwihi) from Aswad bin Amir, from Isra'il, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ahmad (3318), Ibn Majah (3499) and al-Tirmidhi (1757) and (2048) also recorded it in similar form through two routes from Abbad bin Mansur, from Ikrimah, and al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan".
Details of the narration: On this topic it is narrated from Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far, from Imran bin Abi Anas, as "mursal", that: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to apply kohl three times in the right eye and twice in the left", and it does not contain the words "every night".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Abi Shaybah 8/ 21 and 599, and Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" 1/ 416, recorded it through various routes from Abd al-Hamid.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Uthman bin Umar, in Abu al-Shaykh's "Akhlaq al-Nabi" p. 170 - and through his route al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (3205) - went against this and narrated it from Abd al-Hamid, from Imran bin Abi Anas, "from Anas", making it "mawsul" (connected),
Important point: but the preserved (mahfuz) version is the "mursal" one, and its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi objected in his "Talkhis", saying: Nor is he (the narrator) a proof (hujjah).
