Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8436

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to cow's milk and its ghee, and beware of its meat, for its milk and ghee are medicine and cure, whereas its meat is disease."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The words "عن أبيه" have dropped out of manuscripts (Z), (K) and (B); they were in manuscript (M) and then erased (or altered), but the correct course is to retain them, as in
Reference / Source: "Talkhis al-Dhahabi".

Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About (the narrator) Sayf bin Miskin, Ibn Hibban said in
Reference / Source: "al-Majruhin" 1/ 385: He brings inverted (maqlubat) and fabricated (mawdu') narrations; it is not permissible to use him as proof, because he contradicts the reliable narrators despite how few his narrations are.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said: He is not strong. And al-Dhahabi said in
Reference / Source: "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": Ibn Hibban declared Sayf feeble (wah).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Bashkuwal recorded it in
Reference / Source: "al-Athar al-Marwiyyah fi al-At'imah al-Sariyyah" (29) via Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i, from Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (858) via Umar bin al-Khattab al-Sijistani, from Sayf al-Jarmi, from al-Mas'udi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Umar made it a hadith of Sayf al-Jarmi (who is Sayf bin Ubaydullah al-Jarmi, saduq, there is no harm in him), but the correct version is that it is narrated from (the weak narrator) Sayf bin Miskin, as in the narration of Mu'adh al-Anbari, because Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna is more trustworthy and sounder in hadith than Umar al-Sijistani; apparently Umar made a "wahm" (error) in it; and Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a "mursal" narration from Mulaykah bint Amr, which Abu Dawud recorded in
Reference / Source: "al-Marasil" (450) - with the verification (tahqiq) of our shaykh, the great scholar Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut (may Allah have mercy on him); its chain is da'if, as explained in the annotation there.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) it is in Abu Nu'aym's "al-Tibb" (325), with a soft (layyin) chain, and Ibn al-Qayyim said in
Reference / Source: "Zad al-Ma'ad" 4/ 325: What is in this chain is not established.
Details of the narration: And from Ibn Abbas it is in Ibn Adi's "al-Kamil" 6/ 130, with a feeble (wah) chain.
